UAB Picks Up 58-48 Victory Over Men's Basketball

MSU Athletics

The UAB men's basketball team held Morehead State to 34 percent from the field and used a 28-20 advantage in paint points to register a 58-48 non-conference victory on Thursday evening (Dec. 4) at Bartow Arena.

The Blazers, who snap a three-game skid, improve to 3-5 overall and 3-2 at home. The Eagles, who have dropped both contests this week, slip to 4-6 overall and 1-4 on the road. It was the first meeting between the two schools in men's hoops.

Morehead State was limited to just 18-of-53 from the floor, including 9-of-31 (29 percent) in the second half. UAB, meanwhile, was able to knock down 21-of-54 (39 percent) for the night, including 11-of-25 (44 percent) after intermission.

"Our defense has played very well this season, but our offensive efficiency continues to be poor," Head Coach Sean Woods said. "I'm disappointed with all of the turnovers and our lack of offensive execution tonight. We will go back to the drawing board and get better."

Senior C.J. Washington paced the Blazers with 14 points, on 6-of-10 from the field, to go along with seven rebounds. Sophomore Tyler Madison added 11 points, while no other UAB player reached double figures. Two Blazers had four assists apiece and three steals.

Senior Angelo Warner led the Eagles with 13 points, while sophomore Corban Collins tossed in 10 and junior Brent Arrington managed seven. Junior Lyonell Gaines pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, which marked his best effort in an MSU uniform.

Morehead State committed 21 turnovers, which UAB turned into 17 points. The Blazers were tagged with 16 miscues, which the Eagles converted into 13 points. UAB posted a 6-0 advantage in fast-break points and 15-8 scoring edge off the bench.

"We've battled three Conference USA opponents this season," Woods added. "We have quality stretches and then we have stretches with silly mistakes. We need to quit trying to make the home run play and just play solid. We need to listen and follow the script."

UAB's largest lead of 12 points came in the final minute. Morehead State's biggest advantage of four points came with 13:10 to play in the opening half. The Blazers led for more than 29 minutes, while the Eagles were in the driver's seat for less than seven minutes.

Morehead State returns to Johnson Arena on Saturday (Dec. 6) when it hosts Horizon League opponent Oakland at 2 p.m. Once the Eagles get back to campus, they will have traveled 1,620 miles via bus and 6,855 miles via plane in the past three weeks.
