US 23 Road Project Underway In Ashland

Motorists should watch for nighttime traffic changes on Greenup Avenue (US 23) in downtown Ashland beginning Thursday, Aug. 14., as contractors plan to start a $1 million resurfacing and repair project.

Work will take place throughout the two-mile length of Greenup Avenue, from the 7th Street-Winchester Avenue split north of downtown to the 32nd Street-Winchester split south, with initial construction of handicap ramps at intersections and other roadside repairs. Intermittent lane closures along the four-lane highway are possible nightly, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., as well as some possible daytime work zones.

Once full paving begins, which is expected within the next few weeks, the roadway will be reduced to one lane in each direction in work zones, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. each night. Lane closures will be removed, and four-lane traffic will resume, during daytime hours. However, travel could be on rough surfaces at times.

Motorists are advised to watch message boards and heed all warning signs for traffic changes, and drive slow through work zones to protect themselves and workers.

The resurfacing project, being done by Mountain Enterprises Inc. under a low-bid Kentucky Transportation Cabinet contract totaling $1,101,552.75, is expected to continue through mid- to late September.
