Volleyball Eagles Primed for Season-Opening Weekend

MSU Athletics

After nearly a month of preparations, the Morehead State volleyball team opens the 2017 season Friday and Saturday at home with the Eagle Challenge Tournament.

Friday's action includes an 11 a.m. ET match against Delaware State and a 7 p.m. battle with Youngstown State. The Eagles face Winthrop Saturday at 2 p.m. Fans will be treated to free coffee from Eagle Dairy Queen for Friday morning's match. On Saturday, it's National Cherry Popsicle Day, and fans will receive a free treat as well.

Live stats are available for all three matches. The matches against Youngstown State and Winthrop will be streamed live on the OVC Digital Network.

"We are certainly excited to see what this season has in store," said head coach Jaime Gordon. "I know we have a talented roster with a good mix of veterans and freshmen. We give everyone on the team a chance to showcase leadership, no matter if they are a senior or a freshman. Everyone brings a unique skill set, and we hope that translates into a successful season as we try out different combos and lineups."

The Delaware State Hornets finished 2016 at just 1-28, but they are under the leadership of new head coach Whitney Johnson. Youngstown State was 8-22 in 2016 and was picked to finish ninth in the Horizon League this year. The Winthrop Eagles were 15-17 a season ago. The Eagles' roster features two international players, three from Hawaii and one from Puerto Rico.

Morehead State's 13-player roster features athletes from seven different states. The roster breakdown includes one true senior, two redshirt juniors, three true juniors, one redshirt sophomore, one sophomore, two redshirt freshmen and three freshmen.

Up front, middle blockers Karlee Reynolds and Maddie Fella combined for 228 blocks last year, while Jordan Jones and Jessie Wachtman teamed up for 126 rejections as the Eagles led the Ohio Valley Conference in blocks versus other league foes.

Redshirt sophomore libero Danielle McCarson led the back row with 486 digs.

Folllowing this weekend's action, the Eagles remain at home for a Tuesday matchup with Marshall at 6 p.m. ET.
