WMKY Celebrates 50 Years

On this date, June 15, 1965, WMKY was established as east Kentucky's first radio station.

In that first year, WMKY operated on a four hour broadcast schedule as a 10 watt radio station from a classroom inside the Combs Building at Morehead State University. By 1970, WMKY increased to a twelve hour schedule and in 1999, went to a twenty-four hour broadcast day.

Today, WMKY at 90.3FM is the 50,000 watt flagship station for the Morehead State Public Radio (MSPR) network, which includes a translator (W202BH at 88.3FM) in Inez, web-streaming through WMKY’s mobile app and website (www.wmky.org).

Now operating from Breckinridge Hall, WMKY serves more than twenty counties in the region throughout eastern Kentucky, southern Ohio and western West Virginia.

MSPR led by a staff of full-time directors, part-time hosts, student interns, work-studies and volunteers with a mission to provide programming that is educational, informative and entertaining.

MSPR offers award-winning regional news, public affairs and documentary programming. A variety of music programs also fills the weekly broadcast schedule with a mix of classical, jazz and Americana (bluegrass, blues, folk and traditional), which celebrates the vibrant and historically important culture of the region.

So, on this day, June 15, 2015, as we celebrate WMKY’s fifty years of broadcasting, we say THANK YOU for listening!

Thanks to the leadership of the university, the support of the community and all the students and staff who have been a part of WMKY and MSPR. It’s the people who have made this a special place and an integral part of the campus and community.
