Women's Golf Finishes Fourth at OVC Championship

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State women's golf team finished in fourth place at the 2016 Ohio Valley Conference Women's Championship. The Eagles have now finished fifth or better in each of the past eight years, since the program was reestablished in 2008. Seven times they have finished fourth or better and they won the OVC Championship in 2011.

The Eagles were in fifth place after the first round and then made a push towards the end of the second round to find themselves in third place, just five strokes out of second place. After shooting an 18-over on Wednesday, they finished the tournament at 54-over in fourth place. They shot 309-303-306.

"I'm proud of our team for their efforts and attitude this week," said head coach Stephanie Barker. "They have all been working hard and have the right mindset for competing at the highest level. Golf is a game of inches, and this week we were inches from breaking 300 each day. I'm very proud of our ladies, cherish this team, and am excited for the future of our program."

Senior Linnea Scholin led the way for the Eagles from the onset. She opened the first round with birdies on two of her first three holes and led through the first six holes. She had three double bogies on the back nine and finished day one at six-over (78), but still within striking distance. In the second round, she got off to a hot start once again and did not record a bogey until she had a double bogey on No. 15 and a bogey on No. 16. She then closed with her third birdie of the day on No. 18 to finish the day at even-par (72). She entered the final round tied for fifth place at six-over.

In the final round, Scholin shot a six-over 78 and finished the tournament at +12, tied for 10th place.

Freshman Gabriela Villalba Arias finished at +13, tied for 12th place. She closed with a one-over 73 after shooting 78 (six-over) on Monday and Tuesday. Senior Katie Rice tied for 16th at 14-over. Her best round of the tournament was a five-over 77 in the second round.

Junior Anna Magnusson, the reigning OVC Player of the Year, finished tied for 22nd at 19-over after shooting 80-78-77. Sophomore Ebba Gustafsson finished tied for 32nd at 25-over.

Eastern Kentucky won the tournament at 24-over, 18 shots ahead of second place Tennessee Tech. Murray State's Moa Folke held on to win the individual event at three-over.

The Eagles finished the season with a win at the Murray State Invitational and six top-five finishes in 11 events. Magnusson recorded wins at the Bluegrass Fall Kickoff and the CSUN Matador Golf Invitational.
