Morehead State University has been ranked 12th in the South in the U.S. News and World Report rankings of the Best Colleges for Veterans to help veterans pursue a college education under the Post-9/11 GI Bill. 

The new rankings provide data and information on schools that offer federal benefits, including tuition and housing assistance, to veterans and active service members. 

Morehead State University’s Star Theater public programs for December will be “Season of Light” and “Laser Holiday.” 

Launch 1:

Kentucky Space LLC (KS) announced Wednesday that at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday night KentuckySat-2 ( KySat-2) was launched from the NASA Launch Facility at Wallops Island, Virginia. Shortly after liftoff the spacecraft was successfully inserted into orbit at 500 km x 500 km @ 40.5 degrees. Ground operation stations in Kentucky, the U.S. and Japan have reported receiving data packets from the satellite indicating that systems are functioning normally.

The fourth annual “Craft Bizarre: MSU Student Art and Craft Sale” will be held Thursday and Friday, Dec. 5-6, in the gallery of Morehead State University’s Claypool-Young Art Building

The event is free and open to the public. 

Featuring art and craft by MSU students, recent graduates, faculty and staff, the event is an opportunity for the campus and community to purchase locally produced jewelry, paintings, prints, knitwear, ceramics, holiday ornaments and more.

Morehead State University’s Kentucky Center for Traditional Music will present an evening of traditional music at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, at the Morehead Conference Center. 

“Sounds of Our Heritage” is the finale concert by all sections of band classes offered for the fall semester. Ensemble classes are offered in several styles, Bluegrass, Old Time String Band, Old Time Country, and groups that address those styles plus, Western Swing, Celtic, Blues and Gospel and a Traditional Vocal Ensemble. 

The Morehead State Volleyball team won the OVC tournament title with a 3 - 0 (25 - 18, 25 - 14, 25 - 22) win over SIU Edwardsville.

For the 12th consecutive year, Kentucky’s Council on Postsecondary Education awarded federal grant funds to improve P-12 educator quality through professional development programs. 

The Improving Educator Quality (IEQ) grants, totaling $839,000, were awarded to four lead institutions, including the Morehead State University, University of Kentucky, Northern Kentucky University and Murray State University.

Morehead State University’s Kentucky Folk Art Center will host its annual Appalachian Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair at the Laughlin Health Building, on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

With more than 100 artists and craftspeople from Kentucky and other states, arts and craft fair is the largest and most diverse event of its kind in the region. 

The Appalachian Holiday Arts and Crafts Fair offers visitors a wide and varied selection of regional arts and crafts, ranging from the traditional to the cutting edge, including many holiday decorations and gifts.

The Morehead State basketball Eagles scored 69 points in the second half and overtime to erase a 21-point deficit in beating Marshall, 102 - 94.

Morehead State University will host the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference volleyball championship tournament at Wetherby Gym, Nov. 21-23. 

The tournament begins Thursday with quarterfinal matches and continues on Friday with the semifinals. The championship match is set for Saturday.

The Morehead State men's cross country team ran five of the top six 10K times in program history, including a school-record by senior Zachariah Elliott, as the Eagles claimed their highest NCAA Southeast Regional finish in school history Friday at Panorama Farms.

Morehead State finished 14th of 35 teams and had its top five runners all cross the finish line in less than 32 minutes. MSU's previous team best was 17th. Besides Elliott's school standard, sophomore Jesse Moreno and junior Gary Monroe ran times that would have been the school record as well.

Morehead State will make its third NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament appearance in school history on Saturday when it travels to Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Wake Forest. Kick-off from W. Dennie Spry Stadium is set for 7 p.m. ET.

Dr. Karen Petrone, professor and chair of the University of Kentucky’s Department of History, will kick off International Education Week as she will deliver the celebration’s keynote lecture Monday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in room 301 of the Adron Doran University Center. 

Dr. Petrone’s lecture, titled, “Now Russia Returns its History to Itself: Russia Celebrates the Centennial of World War I” will discuss Russian perceptions of World War I.

Morehead State University will join the nationwide effort to raise awareness of sustainability through recycling as it celebrates America Recycles Day Friday, Nov. 15. 

The MSU Sustainability Committee will assist the University in recycling “much more” materials. 

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as much as 45 percent of the 250 million tons of municipal waste generated was from commercial and institutional locations such as business and government offices, retail establishments, schools and hospitals.

Once a year, Morehead State University students, staff and faculty step back in time and place to medieval Europe to present “Ye Olde Madrigal Feaste.” 

The community is invited to spend an evening in the company of the lords and ladies, knights and naves, and jesters and jugglers. Preparations are now under way for the musical, visual and culinary celebration, scheduled to be held Thursday and Friday, Dec. 5-6.

Junior Angelo Warner tallied a career-best 25 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds to lead the Morehead State men's basketball team to a 71-63 victory over East Tennessee State on Tuesday night at the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.

The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Buccaneers slip to 0-2 overall.  MSU also moves to 28-24 in the all-time series with its fourth consecutive victory over ETSU.

Morehead State sophomore outside hitter Courtney Smith recorded a career-high 20 kills Tuesday night, but the host Eastern Kentucky volleyball team upended Morehead State 3-2 (20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 19-25, 15-11) at McBrayer Arena.

The setback halted MSU's nation-leading 36-match conference regular-season winning streak dating back to 2011. The Eagles, who have already clinched their fourth consecutive OVC title, dipped to 14-1 in the conference and 23-7 overall. EKU, which also halted a 15-match losing streak to Morehead State, improved to 17-12 and 9-6 in the league.

The George Mason women's basketball team scored 18 points off 16 Eagle turnovers to defeat Morehead State 74-67 Tuesday at Johnson Arena.

The Eagles (2-1), who were looking for their first 3-0 start since the 2005-06 season, started the contest on a 9-0 spurt, but the Patriots (1-1) answered with a 28-6 run. Mason held MSU scoreless for an 8:14 span that finally ended with 3:42 left in the half.

The Morehead State volleyball team won its fourth consecutive Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship Saturday night with a 3-2 triumph over the visiting Belmont Bruins.

Military Times has announced Morehead State University has made its Best for Vets: Colleges 2014 rankings. 

The organization comprising Army Times, Navy Times, Air Force Times and Marine Corps Times placed a new emphasis on academic rigor this year when conducting and scoring the fourth annual Best for Vets: Colleges survey, a highly respected 150-question analysis of a school’s complete offerings for veterans. 

Morehead State University's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory over host UT Martin on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Championship at Skyhawk Field. 

Junior forward Macy Cobb provided the only score MSU needed in the 46th minute, off an assist from sophomore defender Kelsey Gomez.

Morehead State University will celebrate Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11.

At 11 a.m., a wreath ceremony will be held at the Freedom Park, next to the Rowan County Arts Center.

MSU will host as free luncheon for all veterans at 11:30 a.m. in the Crager Room of the Adron Doran University Center. President Wayne D. Andrews and Rowan County Superintendent Marvin Moore will have the opening remarks. Music will be provided by the Kentucky Center for Traditional Music.

At 1 p.m., a community program will be held at Rowan County Senior High School.

"Dancing with the Faculty” will raise money for one of Morehead State University’s newest student organization, SEED (Students Empowering Exceptional inDividuals), Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. in Button Auditorium. 

Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. 

The event will enlighten the campus community about the student organization which consists of successful MSU students who have various types of disabilities.

U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell received word Wednesday, Nov. 6, that the United States Army has agreed to allow the Morehead State University’s ROTC program to stay open for two years to allow them to improve their officer production rates. This is a reversal of the Army’s previous decision to close the program.

Morehead State University’s Star Theater public programs for November will feature several favorites and its most popular live program. The programs will start on Friday, Nov. 8, with the live show “Tour of the Universe" at 6 p.m., followed by “iPOP” at 7 p.m. and “Electrolaze” at 8 p.m. 

Programs will continue on Saturday, Nov. 9, with afternoon showings of National Geographic productions “Forces of Nature” at 1 p.m., the live program “Night Sky over Morehead” at 2:15 p.m., and “Earth, Moon and Sun” at 3:30 p.m.

Morehead State University President Dr. Wayne D. Andrews will participate in the SOAR (Shaping Our Appalachian Region) Summit in Pikeville, Ky.

Gov. Steve Beshear has proclaimed November “College Application Month” for Kentucky high school seniors. 

“All Kentucky students should consider getting an education beyond high school,” Gov. Beshear said. “Whether it’s a four-year degree or a six-month certificate program from a career and technical school, the more education you have, the better your chances of finding a well-paying job.” 

He added that the more educated the work force is, the easier it is for Kentucky to attract businesses and industries to the state.
