Kentucky is now part of a short but growing list of states California deems off limits for state-funded travel.
Attorney General Xavier Becerra said the Golden State is reacting to recent laws it considers discriminatory against the LGBT community. Kentucky joins three new additions to the restricted travel list – Alabama, South Dakota, and Texas – bringing the total to eight states.
Becerra told a press conference California will “not spend taxpayer dollars in states that discriminate.”
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports California’s Department of Justice is citing Kentucky’s Senate Bill 17– a guaranteeing the right the right to religious expression in schools. LGBT advocates argue the measure will allow student organizations in public schools and colleges to bar gay and transgender people from joining.
