Fleming County Water Line Project Begins

HMB Professional Engineers

The Crestview Water Line project is under way in Fleming County.

Mayor Marty Voiers said work on the project began late last week and is expected to continue until early to mid-August.

According to Voiers, the project will consist of upgrading the water lines running through the Crestview area, as well as adding two fire hydrants.

"We've had a lot of issues with lines breaking or low water pressure over the last several years," Voiers said. "We knew it was time to upgrade them."

Voiers said the existing lines are only about 3 inches and need to be replaced with 6-inch lines.

"By upgrading the lines, it should help some of the problems in the area," he said.

According to Voiers, the existing lines are too small to service a fire hydrant.

"We can't even use fire hydrants with the current lines," he said. "We have one in the area right now, but it sits next to a water tower. By upgrading the lines, we can use these two additional fire hydrants we plan to place."

The project was awarded to Cann-Tech, LLC., as the engineering company. However, the actual work will be completed by city employees.

"It's a self-service project," Voiers said. "Our employees will be completing the work, while also continuing other regular maintenance in the city, which is why it will take a little longer to complete."

The project was initially planned for Fall 2013, but due to late notice of funds received and having to use city labor, plans were put on hold.

The project is fully funded through a $245,000 Community Development Block Grant from the Department of Local Government, Voiers said.
