Maysville Student Wins Congressional Art Competition

The Ledger Independent

Hannah Jackson, a junior at Mason County High School, will have her art displayed at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. for the next year.

Jackson, the daughter of Laura and Paul Jackson of Maysville, entered two photography pieces into the 2015 Congressional Art Competition, to represent U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie's Fourth Congressional District of Kentucky.

The winning pieces of art from across the country are displayed in the tunnel of the U.S. Capitol for one year.  Jackson's art, Down at the Creek, along with the other winning pieces will be unveiled during a reception and ribbon cutting on June 24.

Jackson's interest lies in photography and she captured her award winning piece while wading in a stream near her home on Jersey Ridge Road.  She said she took her camera with her on a pretty day to play around with it and see what she could capture.

As she walked through the water, she tried to capture the effect of the splashing water.  She said she uses a Cannon Rebel T5 and she increased the shutter speed to capture the motion of the water.

Jackson said her photography has been just a hobby and back up plan to her career plans. She said gaining recognition for her work through this award has given her encouragement about her talent and a possible future in that direction.

When asked about her trip to Washington, D.C., she said she will not be able to attend the actual reception on June 24, because she will be on a school sponsored trip to Spain and France.

In addition to having her art work displayed in the Capitol, she received two airline tickets to Washington D.C., which can be used anytime two weeks before or after the reception opening.

She said she will take her father with her because she "figured he'd enjoy going to D.C. because he likes that kind of stuff."  She said her father has never been to the nation's capital and she is looking forward to going with him.

"My dad and I are pretty close," she said.

Jackson is a student of MCHS Art teacher Stephanie Martinez.
