The No. 10 West Virginia Mountaineers scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat the Morehead State soccer team 2-0 Sunday (September 1) at Dick Dlesk Stadium.
The Mountaineers opened the scoring with 31:38 remaining in the match, when Kate Schwindel found a wide-open Kelsie Maloney in front of the goal.
WVU closed the scoring with 9:54 remaining, when Frances Silva connected on a long range effort following an Eagle goal kick.
MSU (0-3-1) junior forward Macy Cobb had the best chance of the first half, but Mountaineer (3-0-1) keeper Sara Keane deflected her shot following a one-on-one opportunity.
WVU had its best chance of the half with back-to-back corner kicks, and the Eagles were forced to clear a shot off the line. MSU was outshot 10-3 in the opening 45 minutes, but each team had only two shots on goal.
The Mountaineers outshot MSU 23-6 overall, including a 7-3 edge in shots on goal.
MSU returns to action on Friday, September 6, for a non-conference match with Northern Kentucky. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. at MSU’s Jayne Stadium.
