Rowan County Clerk Jean Bailey says there were not many problems with Tuesday’s (May 20) primary election at any of the ten polling places. She says a few people registered as independents and wanted to vote, not realizing that they needed to declare a party affiliation to cast a primary ballot.
“Most people think that if they register independent, I can vote for whoever I want. Of course, you can do that in the fall anyway so it doesn’t matter, you know, but when you declare a party you have to vote in that party and we did have a little bit of that but not a great deal of it but they didn’t notify us if they did.” –Jean Bailey
Turnout for the election in Rowan County was about 42 percent, well above the statewide average.
