Soccer Eagles Win at Bowling Green, 2-1

MSU Athletics

The Morehead State soccer team earned its first victory of the 2016 season with a 2-1 win at Bowling Green on Thursday.

"Great win against a quality team on the road," said head coach Warren Lipka. "I am really proud of how this team has responded after our first two matches."

Freshman goalkeeper Eva Ýr Helgadóttir recorded her first career start, following sophomore Michelle Washburn's 11-save performance at Illinois last week. Helgadóttir notched six saves off 20 shots.

"They have gone back to the field and put in the time and effort to improve," Lipka said, "and that work paid off tonight."

Both Morehead State goals were scored by freshman forward Ashley Ritchie. Her first career score came 26:16 into the first half off an assist from sophomore forwward Abby Timm. The New Haven, Ky., native netted her second point by way of an Angela Black assist just more than five minutes into the second half.

Bowling Green freshman Chelsee Washington sunk one in the back of the net three minutes after Ritchie's second goal. However, the Eagles' defense held on for a 2-1 victory.

"Let's enjoy this one tonight, get back to work tomorrow, and get ready for another road game," said Lipka.

Morehead State will play the finale of three consecutive road matches to open the season when the Eagles travel to Highland Heights, Ky. to face the Norse of Northern Kentucky on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.
