Students Share Their Hope for a Better Future at the MLK Dream Wall

Morehead State University’s MLK Dream Wall encouraged students to share their hopes for a better future on Thursday.

The Dream Wall had one of the biggest turnouts of the week. Students wrote down notes and posted it to the wall in order to share their dreams.

“I think it is a beautiful thing that everyone on the campus can come and say what they have a dream about,” said MSU sophomore, Starr Hutcherson.

People wrote about a variety of topics from sexuality, gender, healthcare, education, abuse and more.

“What I love is that you get to see the world through their perspective,” said Shannon Colvin, Associate Director of Leadership, Programming and Inclusion.

According to Colvin, not every event was met with only positive feedback. Tuesday’s, I Have a Dream program drew a mixed response.

“It might have seemed a little invasive for some students,” said Sami Case, Staff Assistant for Programming and Engagement. “It got the word out there and some students were impacted.”

The team involved in MLK Week considered this factor and felt the pros outweighed the cons.

“Sometimes you have to be just a little intrusive because sometimes that is how you educate people and open some eyes,” said Colvin.

The celebration was co-sponsored by the Office of Housing and Residence Life, Campus Activities Board, Eagle Diversity Center and Office of Student Activities.

“It has inspired me to take it to the next level because it was so well received,” said Cory Clark, Minority Academic Services Coordinator.

He hopes the Dream Wall will be able to last all week next year.

“We all have a dream, and it has been going on for a long time,” said Jim Shaw, CEO of the MSU Foundation, when asked his thoughts on the week. “We have come a long way, but we still have a long way to go.”
