June is National Men’s Health Month, and experts have been aiming to spread awareness of the issues men face.
Dr. Craig Burrows is a family doctor at St. Claire Healthcare in Morehead. He said there is a stigma against men seeking medical care or even seeing a doctor, so many men leave serious health concerns untreated.
“Unlike women, who have a health professional -the gynecologist- to deal with their specific needs, there is no ‘man-ecologist’ who focuses on the whole of men’s health,” Burrows said. “The closest to this certainly is the urologist, who deals with kidney, urinary tract, and other reproductive issues with men.”
Burrows added both men and women should seek out a primary care doctor for routine check-ups, so serious problems don’t go unnoticed. He also encourages men to seek out a urologist for diagnosis and treatment of reproductive and urinary conditions.
Dr. Borrows added one leading cause of death is much higher in males than females.
“The third leading cause of death for men, unlike women, is unintentional injury or accidents. This rate is twice the rate of women’s. These include things like accidents or overdoses. This is higher than any other comparable country in the world,” said Dr. Burrows.
