WMKY to Broadcast Humankind Special

WMKY (90.3FM) will broadcast a special program of Humankind during the 6th Annual Justice Festival at Morehead State University. Hosted and produced by David Freudberg in association with WGBH, “The Power of the Pardon” can be heard at 9:00am, 2:00pm, and 7:00pm on Tues., Oct. 6.

“The Power of the Pardon” Program Description

The U.S. Constitution empowers the president to grant clemency, including pardons and commutations, for people who have committed crimes. The executive can intervene only in federal (not state) crimes, but there are very few other restrictions to this sweeping power. In fact, the president is not required to state a reason for the official act of forgiveness.

The pardon was originally intended as an act of mercy. However, with almost no rules, the granting of pardons is ripe for abuse. This Humankind audio documentary examines the origin of pardons, which predate the United States. Through its history, from the Civil War to the Capitol riot, pardons have been controversial. The program will feature comments from legal experts, investigative reporters, and archival audio related to these and other dramatic moments.

About MSU’s Justice Festival

Morehead State University hosts the annual Justice Festival every fall. The event is free and open to faculty, staff, students, and the community. The day-long event features live music, lectures, workshops, art installations, and panel discussions of a variety of social issues including race, gender inequality, immigration, affordable housing, and more.

The 6th Annual Justice Festival takes place from 9:00am to 3:30pm on Tues., Oct. 6 in the Adron Doran University Center (ADUC) and Camden-Carroll Library at Morehead State University.

Opening the day’s events, the keynote address will be presented by Katie Goldey, Certified Speech-Language Pathologist and Assistant Professor of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky. Following opening remarks by Dr. Sylvia Henneberg, Dean, MSU’s Caudill College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, the address will begin at 9:15am in Ballroom A (3rd Floor) of ADUC.
